NATO national military representatives delegation visits North Macedonia (20–23 September 2026)
Delegation to SHAPE held briefings and observed tactical demonstrations at Ilinden barracks; Krivolak training area highlighted as a regional resource.
From 20 to 23 September 2026 a delegation of national military representatives accredited to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) is visiting North Macedonia and the Army for the first time.
The visitors were received today at the "Ilinden" barracks in Skopje by Chief of the General Staff of the Army, Major General Sashko Lafchiski, Deputy Chief Major General Azim Nuredin and Commander of the Command for Operations, Brigadier General Mirche Gjorgoski. The hosts underlined the strategic value of allied cooperation built on trust and shared values within NATO and stressed the Army’s contribution to the alliance’s mobility, resilience and strategic depth through its capabilities and active participation in missions and operations.
Briefings and practical demonstrations
During the visit the delegation received detailed briefings on North Macedonia’s involvement in international missions and activities under NATO, the ongoing modernization and equipping of the Army, and the capacities of the national training area AP "Krivolak", described as one of the most significant training ranges in Southeast Europe.
The guests attended a tactical-technical presentation that allowed them to inspect a portion of the Army’s weaponry, equipment and means, and to learn about their roles and applications in routine tasks. They also observed a methodical demonstration exercise carried out by personnel from the Battalion for Special Purposes, the Light Infantry Battalion Group and the Centre for Breeding and Training of Dogs, gaining a direct impression of the Army’s preparedness and operational abilities.
Dean of the delegation, Major General Stefan Mershenoar from the French Republic, expressed sincere thanks for the hospitality, the high level of organization and the substantive presentations that showcased the Army. He highlighted that such visits make a meaningful contribution to deepening mutual trust, strengthening allied cohesion and enhancing military cooperation within NATO.
These delegations visit on a rotational basis, with a different member state hosting the activity each year. The exchanges are intended to share experience and best practices, deepen mutual understanding and improve interoperability while building stronger partnerships across the Alliance.
