Gavi could leave Barcelona in January if Flick keeps limiting minutes

Barcelona could face an unexpected departure in January if the situation around Gavi does not change. The 22-year-old midfielder — a homegrown talent long identified with the club — has seen his role reduced since returning from injury, logging just 191 minutes across seven official appearances this season.

Flick's decisions and PSG interest

The reduced playing time has renewed transfer speculation, with Paris Saint-Germain one of the clubs reportedly interested in acquiring Gavi as early as the January window. Luis Enrique is said to want the player in Paris, and the expectation is that other clubs would quickly join the race if Barcelona made him available.

Barcelona experienced a similar situation last winter when Dro Fernandez chose to move to PSG after receiving limited opportunities under Hansi Flick. When Flick learned Fernandez planned to leave, the German coach allegedly told him: "Empty your locker and get lost!" The anecdote is often cited now as a warning of how strained relations can accelerate departures.

For Gavi, the calculus now is straightforward: if his minutes do not increase, a transfer becomes a realistic option. He has made 173 appearances for the Catalan club to date, scoring 10 goals and providing 18 assists. Yet his market value is listed at only €25 million — a figure many observers view as low relative to his proven qualities.

Barcelona must decide whether the current dip in playing time is a temporary phase or a signal that Gavi's role in the squad is changing permanently. The January window often produces moves that are hard to predict months in advance; a single change in the relationship between coach and player, or in tactical plans, can alter the course of events.

Whether Gavi will stay and fight for his place or seek a new challenge may become one of Barcelona's most significant stories in the coming weeks.
