Geyser erupts on Poljička Street in Split after heavy rains
A geyser burst through asphalt near the Bishop's Palace at about 9:35 a.m., flooding streets and briefly stopping traffic.
Heavy downpours in Split on September 11 produced dramatic footage across the city as streets turned into torrents and several vehicles became stranded. One particularly striking scene was recorded at the junction near the open-air market known locally as "Pazar."
Geyser erupts on Poljička Street
A dramatic moment unfolded at about 9:35 a.m. on Poljička Street, close to the Bishop's Palace, when a geyser of water burst through the asphalt, eyewitnesses said.
A pharmacist who works at the nearby Bačvice pharmacy described what she saw: "Around 9:35, a geyser started erupting from the asphalt on Poljička Street. I've never seen anything like it in my life. A huge amount of water — we were told that the pressure had blown the manhole cover off — began gushing from the opening," she said.
Within minutes the surrounding area was flooded. "Everything flooded in an instant; a lake formed, and passing through that part of the city became completely impossible," another witness recounted.
Authorities or municipal workers soon replaced the manhole cover and the situation calmed, allowing traffic to resume. "It really was something I saw for the first time in my life," the pharmacist added.
Videos and photos from several neighbourhoods showed widespread urban flooding and localised chaos as residents and drivers coped with sudden, heavy flows of water.
