Orce Gjorgjievski: Skopje cleanup drew over 30,000; 29 new trucks next week
More than 30,000 people joined a citywide cleanup; the mayor announced 29 new collection trucks and free bulky-waste pickup in every municipality.
A large citywide cleanup in Skopje took place today, starting at the City Park and spreading to around 100 locations across the municipality. Organisers estimate that more than 30,000 people — municipal employees, pupils from primary and secondary schools and volunteers — took part in the effort.
Mayor of the City of Skopje, Orce Gjorgjievski, stressed that the campaign exposed a recurring behaviour that undermines cleaning efforts. He said, "No matter how often waste is collected, there are people who leave bulky items around the containers."
Municipal measures and new equipment
Gjorgjievski said the city’s waste situation should improve noticeably in the coming period. He announced that 29 new collection trucks are to be put into service next week to strengthen municipal collection capacity.
In addition to the new vehicles, the mayor announced a plan for free bulky-waste pickup in every municipality, intended to discourage illegal dumping around containers and to make disposal easier for residents.
Organisers said the clean-up action combined institutional staff with civic participation, aiming both to remove accumulated litter and to raise public awareness about proper disposal practices.
The city plans to follow up the one-day action with continued collection and the new services, while urging citizens to use the free bulky-waste pickup and municipal containers responsibly.
