Goce Nikolovski and the story behind 'Biser balkanski'
The 1990 hit became Nikolovski's signature and a staple of Macedonian patriotic music.

Goce Nikolovski is remembered across North Macedonia most of all for one song: "Biser balkanski." First performed to wide acclaim in 1990, the composition became Nikolovski's signature and later took on an almost emblematic place in the country's patriotic repertoire.
Creation, credits and the defining refrain
The music of "Biser balkanski" was written by Hilmi Bilbil, the lyrics by Jovan V. Pavlovski and the arrangement by Tomislav Tanevski. Its memorable refrain — "Hey, Macedonia, you are a Balkan pearl" — and the blend of newly composed folk style with recognizable Macedonian traditional elements helped the song resonate with audiences during a pivotal historical moment.
Presented at Folk Fest Valandovo in 1990, the song won broad public attention and became the high point of Nikolovski's career. Over time it was performed by many other Macedonian singers and musicians, including Naum Petreski, Jordan Mitev and Zoran Dzhorlev, which underlined its lasting popularity.
Nikolovski was born in 1947 in Skopje and began his musical path while young. For a period he performed as a vocalist with the group Daltoni from Niš before pursuing a solo career that moved between popular and folk music. The 1990 success of "Biser balkanski" remains the moment with which his name is most closely associated.
The song gained extra weight during the early 1990s as North Macedonia moved toward independence; its message, melody and emotional charge quickly lodged in the collective memory. It is frequently performed at celebrations, concerts, official ceremonies and national events, and for many listeners has near-anthem status.
Nikolovski died tragically in December 2006 in Skopje. On 16 December 2006 neighbors heard a gunshot at around 22:00. Around 02:00 his son Aleksandar returned home and found his father's lifeless body, then called the police. At 03:00 the police arrived and discovered the body. Goce Nikolovski committed suicide by firing a bullet into his head while alone at home; his body was found next to a pistol and a note to his family. Despite his death, "Biser balkanski" has continued to live on as a song that evokes strong emotions, belonging and pride for generations of Macedonians.
