Major fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta leaves dead and injured
A blaze during a live‑fire exercise spread beyond the base; officials withhold exact casualty figures pending investigation.

A large blaze erupted yesterday at around 16:00 local time inside CFB Wainwright, one of Canada’s busiest military bases in Alberta, killing and injuring multiple people as the fire spread into surrounding rural land.
Canadian Armed Forces officials say they are still assessing the full scope of the incident and will withhold detailed casualty figures until an investigation is complete. Strong winds pushed the flames beyond the base perimeter, complicating emergency response.
Some local outlets have reported, unofficially, that at least seven people were killed and dozens more hurt after a gas pipeline was struck during a live-fire training exercise. Authorities have not confirmed those numbers.
“I cannot recall an incident like this in recent times,” said Defense Minister Dejvid Mekginti, announcing that the armed forces, the federal government and provincial and municipal authorities are working together to determine what happened and that a formal probe will be opened.
Hospitals and emergency services
Because of the large number of casualties, hospitals in Edmonton activated an orange code, enacting special mass-casualty protocols. Local emergency teams and military responders were deployed to treat the wounded and secure the area around the base.
Prime Minister Mark Karni said the blaze followed “a serious incident,” but declined to provide further details as investigations continue. Officials have warned the public to avoid the area while emergency operations proceed.
