Major change on Serbia's motorways: toll booths to be phased out

Serbia announced on August 28, 2026 that its motorways will gradually remove traditional toll plazas and switch to a free-flow electronic tolling model over the next five to six years, a change that will affect drivers from neighbouring North Macedonia who use Serbian roads or transit to other European countries.

What will change on the road

The new system will replace physical toll booths with electronic charging that relies on TAG devices and artificial intelligence to identify and bill vehicles without stopping. The public enterprise Roads of Serbia said the rollout will be phased and completed within roughly five to six years.

For drivers from North Macedonia the transition should be largely seamless if they already use the shared web platform and their existing TAG device. Macedonian TAG users will be able to continue using the same equipment for passage through Serbian motorways.

Roads of Serbia warned that the payment card linked to a driver's TAG profile must be valid and carry sufficient funds. "The card must be registered and active separately for each country," the enterprise emphasised, so travellers should check their card settings ahead of trips.

Officials also said they are working to expand interoperability: negotiations are underway with Greece — complicated by the presence of multiple concessionaires there — and integration is planned with countries that use electronic vignettes such as Hungary, Slovenia and Romania. The aim is to allow regional drivers to travel through several states using a single system.

Authorities stress there will be no immediate increase in toll prices; charges will continue to be calculated exclusively by distance travelled and vehicle category. A pilot free‑flow system is already operating on the Belgrade bypass for heavy goods vehicles (trucks with four or more axles). Currently more than 65 percent of Serbia's toll revenue is collected electronically, and drivers are advised to switch to electronic payment with a TAG device to avoid summer and holiday queues.
