Greece offers up to €10,000 for families moving to border areas

The Greek state will offer financial support of up to €10,000 to families who choose to relocate to the country's border areas, the government announced as part of a package aimed at addressing local population decline. Applications will be submitted through a dedicated online platform expected to open in October.

The measure is presented as one element of a broader initiative to stimulate demographic renewal and strengthen peripheral border communities. Detailed rules on eligibility, required documents and the list of qualifying localities will be published on the platform once it becomes active.

Why authorities are targeting border areas

Officials say the offer is intended to ease the financial burden of moving and setting up a new household, making it more attractive for families to settle permanently in regions that have experienced out-migration and population ageing. The maximum grant will depend on the programme’s specific criteria.

Greek authorities and local stakeholders argue that attracting new families could revive local economies: more residents support shops, hospitality businesses and craftsmen, while increasing demand for schools, kindergartens, health care and infrastructure.

At the same time, the government notes that cash assistance alone is not decisive. Employment opportunities, housing availability and prices, quality of schools and health services, and transport links are crucial factors for families considering a permanent move.

Prospective applicants should wait for the platform’s launch in October to learn the full application procedure and whether they qualify for the full €10,000 support. For families already considering relocation, the measure could represent a significant contribution toward the costs of moving and establishing a new home.
