Hack of Alternative for Germany: over 420,000 emails and 50,000 attachments published

More than 420,000 emails and over 50,000 attached documents from the German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) have been published online after a cyberattack, the party confirmed.

Timeline and party statement

In a statement issued on 29 October, AfD said that unauthorized actors gained access in September to ten electronic mailboxes and in early October to several websites connected to the party. Much of the copied material was published on 19 October.

News outlets in Germany are analysing the released archive, which reportedly contains bank statements, information on donations, internal minutes and documents from the party's arbitration bodies.

The archive is said to include internal records that touch on donation flows, intra-party disputes and disciplinary proceedings against members over allegations of right-wing extremism.

AfD confirmed the leak and outlined the timing of the breaches, but has not published a full inventory of the files. The scale of the release has prompted scrutiny from journalists and political observers in Germany.

Authorities and the party will have to determine what sensitive data was exposed and whether laws on data protection or party financing were breached; investigations and further analysis of the material are expected to continue.
