Muamet Hoxha: Environment Ministry not directly responsible for Kumanovo waste
Hoxha told parliament the regional waste centre in Sveti Nikole is EU‑funded and a procurement to select the builder is ongoing.

Minister Muamet Hoxha said the Ministry of Environment is not directly responsible for the waste problem in Kumanovo and that a regional waste collection centre will be built in nearby Sveti Nikole with EU support.
Hoxha made the remarks during a parliamentary session on opposition questions, replying to MP Oliver Spasovski (SDSM) about delays at the Krasta landfill and ongoing waste disposal issues in Kumanovo. He stressed that the Ministry is not directly involved in the project’s implementation. ([moepp.gov.mk](https://www.moepp.gov.mk/en-GB/ministerstvo/minister?utm_source=openai))
Details of the planned centre
According to the minister, the planned regional centre in Sveti Nikole is financed with European Union funds under the IPA programme, and a procurement procedure is under way to select the company that will build it.
“The latest information we have is that the procedures are still ongoing and that we are waiting soon for a final decision which we as the Ministry hope will be positive, that is that a company will be selected and the operator will soon begin construction of a regional centre for waste collection that will be in Sveti Nikole,” Hoxha said.
He also reminded MPs that, under national law, transport, collection and disposal of waste fall within the powers of local self-government, making municipalities the bodies primarily responsible for day-to-day waste management.
