Horizon Organic recalls 53,760 aseptic chocolate milk cartons in U.S.
Voluntary recall announced after a sealing defect that can make packages swell, leak or spoil the product.
Horizon Organic Dairy has initiated a voluntary recall of its Organic Aseptic Chocolate Milk 1% in the United States after discovering a packaging sealing defect that can lead to premature spoilage.
Details of the recall
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the recall covers 53,760 individual packages that were distributed nationwide. Company statements say the problem is technical — related to sealing — and not caused by chemical or bacterial contamination.
Horizon’s quality and food safety head, Kendra Harrison, said the recall is driven solely by the sealing issue and not by allergens or pathogens. "This issue can cause packages to appear swollen or leak, and the contents to spoil rapidly, making the product unsafe to drink," Harrison said.
The recall includes two pack formats:
- 12-count cartons (34,524 cartons) with UPC 742365002700 and best-by dates from January 28 to February 3, 2027.
- 18-count cartons (19,236 cartons) with UPC 742365208867 and best-by dates from January 31 to February 2, 2027.
Horizon emphasized the measure is precautionary. The company urged consumers who purchased the affected lots to discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund, and to contact their customer service with questions.
In North Macedonia such public recall notices are less frequent. The domestic Food and Veterinary Agency (АХВ) typically issues alerts more sporadically than agencies in the U.S. and Western Europe, though it has acted on serious hazards reported through European systems in past cases.
One recent larger incident on the domestic market involved an urgent recall of the infant formula Aptamil AR 2 (400 g, batch 2027.01.02) after detection of the toxin cereulide, which causes rapid vomiting and diarrhea. That case — together with preventive checks on other formulas such as some Nestlé products — has renewed debate about whether local markets need greater transparency and more frequent public recalls along Western European practices.
