Croatian government plans €6 annual pension supplement per year of service

The Croatian government has included in its revised 2026 budget a proposal for an annual pension supplement of €6 for each year of pensionable service, the same rate paid last year. The proposal must be confirmed by the government by October 31, 2026, while pensioners' organizations are pressing for larger payments.

Budget impact and demands

Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy Minister Alen Ružić said the proposed amount remains unchanged for now but that the government could consider raising it if additional funds are freed from budget reserves.

Under the proposed calculation, a retiree with 30 years of service would receive €180 annually, with €210 for 35 years and €240 for 40 years of service.

Pensioners' groups have called for higher rates: the Matica of Pensioners of Croatia is proposing €10 per year of service, while the Pensioners' Union demands €12 per year.

Ružić noted that each €1 increase in the supplement would cost the state budget about €40 million. By that estimate, raising the rate from €6 to €10 would require roughly an additional €160 million, and meeting the union's €12 demand would add about €240 million to expenditures.

The annual supplement was introduced last year. Its size is calculated according to total pensionable years, and the government will determine the final 2026 amount when it adopts the budget decision.
