Houthis strike Mocha port — seven killed and 30 wounded in new wave of attacks

Houthis launched a fresh wave of drone and missile strikes on the port city of Mocha along Yemen’s Red Sea coast on August 9, 2026, killing at least seven people and wounding 30, local military authorities reported.
Repeated strikes and port damage
The attack came less than 24 hours after a previous barrage on Mocha that left at least 11 dead — eight members of the military and three civilians — and 32 wounded. Authorities say the recent strikes again hit civilian buildings, power plants and port infrastructure, while commercial premises, goods and food reserves suffered substantial damage.
Footage from the area showed large plumes of smoke rising over the port after the strikes.
Yemen’s armed forces said their air defences intercepted and shot down 11 drones used in the latest attack, and that two ballistic missiles fell into the sea without striking their intended targets. The military said that in the most recent assault four soldiers and three civilians were killed.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said the targets were positions of Saudi forces and weapons storage in the area, and the group described the strikes as a response to what it called a continued build-up of Saudi military presence. Hizam al Asad, a member of the Houthi political council, said explosions, fires and expanding clouds of smoke at the port were caused by large quantities of weapons and military equipment stored there.
The new strikes mark a further escalation along Yemen’s western coastline and come amid wider exchanges in the region, including Houthi attacks on Saudi facilities reported in recent days.
