Thousands protest in Pristina after the killing of Arlinda Zekaj
Protesters smeared government buildings with red paint and demanded accountability after the murder of 49-year-old Arlinda Zekaj.

Thousands of people took to the streets in Pristina yesterday to protest what organizers called systemic failures to protect women from violence following the killing of 49-year-old Arlinda Zekaj.
Red paint thrown on government buildings as anger mounts
Demonstrators poured red paint over government buildings and rallied outside institutions, demanding accountability and faster protections after Zekaj was killed outside her home near Peja on Sunday.
Authorities say Zekaj is the eighth victim of domestic violence in Kosovo this year. Organizers and activists accused state institutions of failing to provide adequate protection and called for clear responsibilities and immediate reforms.
Zekaj, who held American and Kosovar citizenship, had reportedly sought protection from authorities before the attack and warned she feared for her life. Her son‑in‑law, the suspect in the killing, was arrested on Monday evening after fleeing the scene.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti requested detailed reports from the ministries of justice and of internal affairs to identify possible failures in institutional response. He said the reports would be made public.
Although Kosovo has legal measures aimed at combating violence against women, activists say coordination among the police, social services, prosecutors and courts remains insufficient, leaving women at risk despite existing laws.
