Prosecutor Iskra Hadzi Vasileva has been elected the new head of the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office for Prosecution of Organized Crime and Corruption (OJO GOKK) by a vote among her peers, a vote held this week after presentations by candidates. According to the aggregated results from the five polling stations, Hadzi Vasileva received 64 votes from a total of 171 valid ballots. No objections to the election process were filed by her rivals, and the council formally announced the final tally later in the day.

Colleagues say the vote expressed clear support, but commentators and civic groups note that the real test will be the office's case work: whether indictments, asset recovery and prosecutions for organised crime and high-level corruption increase in pace and lead to convictions. Observers also flagged that some high-profile cases she has worked on will continue to follow her into the leadership post.
