Ohrid prosecutor seeks detention for three after burning waste at Bukovo to extract copper
Prosecutors say three people burned rubber cable waste at the Bukovo landfill on 17 September to extract copper, releasing smoke and harmful substances.
The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Ohrid has opened an investigation and issued an order to pursue criminal charges against three people for the offense "Endangering the environment and nature with waste" under Article 230, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code.
According to the case file, the three alleged accomplices arrived on 17 September at the Bukovo landfill in a commercial vehicle loaded with waste. There, they began burning rubber waste cables to separate the copper wires inside them.
The burning produced smoke and released harmful substances into the air, according to prosecutors who describe the act as posing a risk to the environment and public health.
Prosecutor requests detention
The public prosecutor submitted a proposal to the judge of preliminary procedure at the Basic Court in Ohrid asking that pre-trial detention be imposed on the three suspects. The request cites, above all, the danger of flight and the possibility that the accused could influence witnesses in the proceedings.
The court will consider the prosecutor's proposal and decide on measures against the suspects in line with procedural rules. No further details about the identities of the charged persons were released in the prosecutor's order.
