Kirill Dmitriev proposes Bering Strait tunnel connecting Russia and the United States

On 11 October 2026 Kirill Dmitriev, the presidential envoy for investments and international economic cooperation and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), wrote on X that the Boring Company should start building an intercontinental tunnel beneath the Bering Strait connecting Russia and the United States.

"The time has come for the Boring Company to begin construction of the Putin-Trump tunnel, which will unite Russia and the United States, Eurasia and America," Dmitriev wrote on X, and he published a rough diagram showing how a tunnel under the Bering Strait could be laid out.

Earlier estimate and technical sketch

Dmitriev had previously raised the idea in October 2025, proposing the use of the Boring Company's tunnelling technology for an Alaska–Russia link. At that time he said the undertaking could require up to eight billion dollars and might be completed in less than eight years.

The latest post names the American company founded by Elon Musk as the preferred contractor and repeats Dmitriev's vision of an engineered link spanning continents. He also supplied a schematic diagram that he described as a preliminary concept for routing and construction.

The proposal comes amid recurring public and official discussions about large-scale infrastructure projects that span long distances and harsh environments. Skeptics point to geological, environmental and political obstacles; proponents argue new tunnelling techniques and investment could make ambitious crossings feasible.

Whether the idea will progress beyond a public proposal and a diagram depends on technical studies, financing agreements and bilateral cooperation — areas that historically have been complex for projects between Russia and the United States.
