Criminal charges filed over production and sale of bacterially contaminated ice in Radovish
Authorities say T. D. (62) and S. D. (62) produced and sold contaminated ice using water from an illegal connection; searches were carried out on 16 September.
Two residents of Radovish have been charged after authorities found they produced and sold ice that contained bacteria and obtained water for production from an illegal tap on the municipal water network, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.
The Regional Police Directorate Strumica – Basic Police Station Radovish filed a criminal complaint with the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Radovish against T. D. (62) and S. D. (62), on grounds of reasonable suspicion that they committed the continued criminal offence "production and placing on the market of harmful food and other products" under Article 213 of the Criminal Code.
Police searches and evidence
According to the ministry, the two suspects operated for several years as unregistered ice producers, making ice in improvised and unhygienic conditions and then supplying it unsafely to other businesses and private persons. Laboratory testing established the presence of bacteria in the ice.
On 16 September, acting on a court order, police officers from the Regional Police Directorate Strumica – Basic Police Station Radovish, in coordination with a state food inspector from the Food and Veterinary Agency, carried out searches of a home and other premises at four locations used by the defendants.
The case has been submitted to the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Radovish for further action.
