La Liga to play three rounds in 10 days, tight schedule raises concerns
From 11 September 2026 to 20 September 2026 La Liga will stage rounds five–seven with tight turnarounds for some clubs.
La Liga will cram three league rounds into a ten-day stretch this month, creating one of the busiest starts to a season in recent memory. From 11 September 2026 until 20 September 2026, matches from rounds five, six and seven are scheduled with very short recovery windows for several clubs.
Compressed calendar and the reason behind it
The tight timetable is a direct result of changes to the international calendar: La Liga reserved the late-September to early-October window for national team fixtures in advance, forcing the organisers to fit three league rounds into the first three weeks of September.
That packing of fixtures will hit some teams particularly hard. Málaga, for example, face Villarreal on Thursday at 21:30 and then travel to Getafe on Sunday at 14:00 — a gap of only 64.5 hours between the two matches. Getafe themselves will have roughly 67 hours between their games against Betis and Málaga.
Fans have voiced frustration too, because several of the most attractive matches fall on weekdays and late evening kick-offs. Real Madrid are set to play Elche on Tuesday at 21:30, Barcelona will host Racing on Wednesday at the same time, and Atlético Madrid are scheduled to face Osasuna on Wednesday at 19:00.
Although La Liga has seen busy runs before, a ten-day period containing three full rounds is unusual; the last time three rounds were played within ten days was in the 2014/15 season.
Clubs, supporters and broadcasters will now have to adapt to the marathon-like schedule in the coming days as the league attempts to accommodate both domestic competition and the international break.
