Levica: Authorities reopen Pchinja riverbed for business despite four deaths

The political party Levica says authorities are again allowing interventions in the Pchinja Riverbed that appear to favour private business interests, even after incidents that left four people dead.

Levica reports that while officials frame the measures as riverbed regulation, residents on the ground are witnessing new, large-scale removal of material from the river.

"Institutions must not hide interventions behind bureaucratic terminology whose consequences are directly felt by the people who live along the Pchinja," the party said.

Environmental and local impact

According to Levica, these operations are presented as technical or regulatory works but resemble commercial extraction that can affect flood risk, river morphology and the livelihoods of communities along the Pchinja.

The party highlights that such interventions come after incidents that resulted in four human fatalities, and argues that any work in the riverbed requires transparent oversight and public explanation.

Levica's statement underlines residents' accounts of renewed mass extraction and calls attention to the consequences felt by people living beside the river.
