North Macedonian MPs attend first parliamentary meeting with NATO's North Atlantic Council in Brussels

On 26 October 2026, Brussels hosted the first-ever parliamentary meeting between the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the Alliance's North Atlantic Council (NAC), held under a joint initiative of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and NATO. The meeting brought together heads of national delegations to the Parliamentary Assembly and chairs of parliamentary defence committees.

Focus on parliaments' role after recent NATO summits

Organisers described the gathering as an effort to underline the essential role allied parliaments play in implementing the key objectives agreed at the NATO Summits in The Hague in 2025 and in Ankara in 2026. Delegates discussed parliamentary tools and coordination needed to translate summit decisions into national policies.

The delegation from North Macedonia participated in the meeting. The delegation comprised MP Dragan Kovachki, head of the Parliament's delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and MP Pavle Arsoski, chair of the Committee on Defense and Security.

Participants exchanged views on how parliaments can strengthen oversight of defence spending, support resilience measures and maintain political backing for collective decisions across member states.

The meeting marks a new level of formal engagement between NATO's political leadership and national legislatures, aiming to tighten the link between summit-level commitments and parliamentary implementation at home.
