Massive jellyfish presence off Rovinj as tourists post videos
Photos and videos show numerous Cotylorhiza tuberculata beneath the surface; experts warn against touching them.

The sea off Rovinj has drawn attention in recent days after tourists posted photos and videos showing large numbers of jellyfish visible just beneath the surface.
Clips circulated on social media show swarms of jellyfish drifting along the shoreline and moving out toward the open Adriatic. Many of the recordings underline how dense the aggregations are in some spots.
Beachgoers who filmed the scenes said they were surprised by the scale of the animals, and several users reported that the high concentration of jellyfish makes swimming in certain areas “almost impossible.”
Expert advice
Researchers at the Center for Marine Research at the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Rovinj have recorded an increase in the Mediterranean jellyfish Cotylorhiza tuberculata. This species is native to the northern Adriatic Sea and typically appears during summer and autumn.
Although Cotylorhiza tuberculata is generally not considered dangerous, contact with the animal can cause mild skin irritation or a burning sensation. Experts therefore advise swimmers not to touch jellyfish if they encounter them.
