Melania Trump brokers local ceasefire for Oleshky, effective October 29, 2026
The White House says the truce covers only the town of Oleshky and aims to allow humanitarian access and civilian evacuations.

The White House announced that Melania Trump has secured a local ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine that applies only to the town of Oleshky and will take effect on October 29, 2026.
Oleshky, in Ukraine’s Kherson region and occupied by Russian forces since February 2022, has been facing a deepening humanitarian crisis as residents warned of worsening shortages of food and essential supplies.
"Both nations agreed to temporarily suspend all military operations in Oleshky, in order to allow entry of humanitarian aid and to prepare evacuation of civilians through a designated safe passage," the White House statement said.
Humanitarian access and evacuation plans
Melania Trump described conditions in the town as desperate and urged urgent relief efforts. "Oleshky is a frontline town, on the brink of disaster. The remaining population of Oleshky are mostly elderly residents who urgently need medical assistance, medicines, food and clean water," she said.
The statement says Melania Trump and her representatives worked directly with Ukrainian and Russian leadership to define the terms of the local truce. According to the White House, between 1,700 and 2,000 residents remain in Oleshky — mostly elderly people and roughly 50 children — compared with nearly 24,000 inhabitants before the war.
The White House added that around 90 percent of the town was flooded after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam. Civilian teams from both countries will be permitted to visit people in their homes and to arrange transport for those who want to evacuate to either Russia or Ukraine; the teams will be followed by an unnamed American media organization to document the process.
The development follows mounting pressure by President Donald Trump on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to reach an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin on an end to hostilities that began with the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The White House announcement was issued on October 23, 2026.
