Mice Jankulovski takes part in Mark Rothko painting symposium in Daugavpils, Latvia
Works produced at the symposium will remain in the Mark Rothko Museum collection; the exhibition was opened by director Maris Cacka.

Renowned artist Mice Jankulovski participated in a painting symposium held at the Mark Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Latvia. The event gathered a group of international painters who worked on new pieces on site and presented them in a concluding exhibition.
The symposium included ten invited artists: Nicole Mueller (USA); Gustavs Filipsons (Latvia); André Hemer (New Zealand/Austria); Weronika Hempel (Poland); Mice Jankulovski (N. Macedonia); Rosa Juanco (Spain); Vilen Künnapu (Estonia); Henry Mandell (USA); Peter Maslow (USA); and Emma Velde-Schaffer (New Zealand).
Exhibition and museum acquisition
The exhibition of works created during the symposium was opened by the director of the Mark Rothko Museum, Maris Cacka, and the symposium and exhibition were curated by Pavels Terentjevs. According to the museum’s expert commission, the works produced during the residency will remain in the Mark Rothko Museum collection.
For decades Mice Jankulovski has focused on painting and drawing while also maintaining a public presence across several artistic disciplines, including caricature, satirical painting on glass, animated film and even palindromes. His practice blends traditional techniques with a wide-ranging creative approach.
Jankulovski’s biography lists more than sixty solo exhibitions at home and abroad as well as notable participations at international exhibitions and biennales in cities such as Florence, Saint Petersburg, Thessaloniki, Venice, Turin, Larnaca and Varna.
He is the recipient of numerous awards, among them: 2025 – Special GRAND PRIX at the OSTEN Biennale of Awarded Artists 2025 (Struga, N. Macedonia); 2024 – Annual Small Format Award, Association of Fine Artists of Macedonia (Skopje, N. Macedonia); 2023 – GRAND PRIX of the 17th International Biennial of Miniature Art (G. Milanovac, Serbia); 2022 – National Lifetime Achievement Award “11 October”; 2021 – Best Artist Award (Larnaca Biennale, Cyprus); 2020 – REMBRANDT AWARD for Excellence in Art (SAVU – World Association for Visual Arts); 2019 – EL GRECO AWARD for Best Artist (Art Thessaloniki, Greece); 2019 – “LORENZO IL MAGNIFICO” Award for Lifetime Achievement (XII Biennale, Florence, Italy); 2018 – Artist of the World (Larnaca Biennale, Cyprus); 2017 – GRAND PRIX (19th International Biennial of Printmaking, Varna, Bulgaria); 1997 – GRAND PRIX World Gallery of Caricature, Skopje; 1985 – “13 NOVEMBER” Award of the City of Skopje; 1985 – GOLD MEDAL (Council of Europe award) and SILVER URN for humorous design on a given theme (38th International Exhibition of Humour on the Theme: Man and Technology, Bordighera, Italy).
Several monographs, books and catalogues document his work, with texts by domestic and international critics and art historians such as Aleksandar Borovski (Russia), Enzo di Martino (Italy), Prof. Manos Stefanidis (Greece), Dr. Melanie Zefferino (Italy), Dr. Zsolt Petrani (Hungary), Dr. Denitsa Janeva (Bulgaria), as well as contributions from fellow artists and cultural figures.
