Mickoski supports building data centres: 'prosperity and the future'

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski defended plans to develop data centres in North Macedonia, saying on September 1, 2026 that such investments form part of a global technological shift with economic benefits.

Mickoski linked his stance to recent public comments by US President Donald Trump and argued that countries that invest in digital infrastructure secure jobs and attract foreign capital.

Addressing concerns raised in public debate about water and electricity use and the transparency of talks with potential investors, Mickoski said the government will continue to steer the country toward modernization and growth.

"So it is clear where the world is heading and this process is irreversible. Whenever you go East, especially to Asian countries, when you see the humanoid robots, when you see how modern transport solutions work and when you encounter those technological achievements, you return amazed," Mickoski said.

Arguments and objections

Supporters of the projects emphasise potential gains: new IT jobs, stronger digital infrastructure, increased interest from international companies and a boost to the country’s competitiveness. Critics point to possible risks such as high energy consumption and insufficient transparency, and they demand thorough long-term analyses.

Responding to opposition criticism, Mickoski said the executive will press ahead with its policies. "Let them continue with their politics of opposition, and we know where we are leading the country and will lead it to prosperity and the future," the prime minister emphasised.
