Landfill fire near Kriva Palanka burns for over 15 hours, mayor says

Kriva Palanka's mayor, Sashko Mitovski, said in a Facebook video that a landfill near the town has been burning for more than 15 hours and that crews continue to fight the blaze.

The fire was first reported yesterday at about 18:00, and Mitovski told residents the incident has grown in scale and severity compared with initial assessments.

Mitovski described the scene and the response efforts:

Response from local services and volunteers

"During the night, that is, for more than fifteen hours, the fire department of Kriva Palanka, employees of the public enterprise 'Komunalec', and helpers from our neighboring municipality Rankovce were actively operating here; several companies also joined the action on their own initiative. What I can say is that the fire is somewhat larger and more serious in extent and, despite extinguishing with water, a larger quantity of earth material is needed," Mitovski said.

He appealed to residents for patience over the smoke and unpleasant smells spreading from the site. "I sincerely expect that by the end of the day we will manage to deal with this serious challenge, because all services have been put into operation," he added, and thanked volunteers who stepped in to help.

Mitovski also said he would provide timely updates if the situation changes.

According to the Center for Crisis Management, the fire remained active as of 13:00 at the town exit on the landfill site.
