MIA: 63 drivers fined for drunk driving, eight detained
Nationwide traffic action on the night of 16–17 August 2026 resulted in 63 sanctions for drunk driving and eight detentions under the Criminal Code.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported that 63 drivers were fined for operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol during a nationwide action on the night of August 16–17, 2026; eight drivers were detained under Article 297‑a of the Criminal Code.
"During the past night (16/17.08.2026) in the period from 23:00 to 5:00, the Traffic Sector of the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted an action to sanction drivers who operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol on the territory of the entire country, in which 63 drivers were sanctioned. Of them, 12 in the territory of SVR Bitola and SVR Kumanovo, nine in the territory of SVR Veles and SVR Ohrid, eight in the territory of SVR Kumanovo... By the Mobile Unit for Road Traffic Safety on the roads four drivers under the influence of alcohol were sanctioned. Eight drivers were deprived of their liberty under Article 297-a of the Criminal Code," the MIA said.
In addition to the alcohol-related fines, police recorded 162 other types of traffic violations during the same control operation, the ministry added.
The crackdown was carried out by the Traffic Sector across multiple regional units; the ministry highlighted enforcement in Bitola, Kumanovo, Veles and Ohrid among others. The Mobile Unit for Road Traffic Safety also took part in the operation, issuing separate sanctions.
Authorities said the targeted checkpoints and inspections are part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and will continue in the coming days. The MIA urged all road users to respect traffic rules and for responsible behavior to reduce accidents and save lives.
The MIA emphasized the combination of fines and criminal measures—including detentions under Article 297‑a of the Criminal Code—aims to deter repeat offenders and strengthen preventive work on the country’s roads.
