On this day in 1992: Assembly adopted the flag and the anthem "Denes nad Makedonija"
The Assembly approved a red flag with a golden‑yellow sun and confirmed the anthem "Denes nad Makedonija" in 1992; the flag design was revised on 5 October 1995.
On September 11, 1992, the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia adopted two of the young state’s key symbols: a national flag and the anthem "Denes nad Makedonija".
The flag approved that day featured a red field with a golden‑yellow sun composed of eight primary and eight secondary rays. That version remained the country’s official flag until October 1995.
Design change after international reactions
Following political developments and responses from abroad about the flag’s appearance, the Assembly adopted a revised flag on 5 October 1995. The new law kept the red field and golden‑yellow sun but altered the layout so that the sun’s eight rays extend to the edges of the flag.
The 1995 design continues to serve as the national flag of the state.
At the same 1992 sitting the Assembly also confirmed the anthem "Denes nad Makedonija". The words were written by Vlado Maleski and the music composed by Todor Skalovski.
With these decisions, the country that declared independence in 1991 completed the set of its principal state symbols; the flag and the anthem became established elements of its institutional and national identity.
