Flowers to be laid at Karpalak in memory of reservists killed in 2001

A delegation from the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff of the Army will lay flowers today at the memorial plaque near the site known as Karpalak in memory of ten reservists from Prilep who lost their lives in 2001.

Flowers will also be placed at the memorial monument to the Macedonian heroes in the centre of Prilep.

Background of the August 2001 attack

On 8 August 2001, a convoy that included a Hermelin vehicle, two buses, a truck and a van departed from the Prilep barracks en route to Tetovo. Near the Karpalak area the convoy fell into an ambush and came under heavy fire; the extraction of survivors and the wounded lasted for hours.

In that attack 10 reservists were killed and 3 were wounded.

The commemorative events today are organised by the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff; delegations will lay flowers at both the Karpalak plaque and the memorial in Prilep to honour those who died in the 2001 conflict.
