A 44-year-old from Negotino reported on 19 August that a scam SMS about a traffic fine led to a 27,000-denar loss after he followed payment instructions.

Negotino man scammed by fake SMS about traffic fine, lost 27,000 denars

A 44-year-old resident of Negotino reported to the Basic Police Station (OVR) in Negotino on 19 August that he had been deceived by a fraudulent SMS and lost 27,000 denars.

The message informed him of an alleged traffic violation and included payment instructions for a fine of 920 denars. The SMS stated that a 50 percent discount applied and displayed a payment amount of 460 denars.

Following the instructions in the text, he started the payment procedure using his wife's bank card. He first received a notification of a successful transaction, then another message shortly afterwards; when he checked his account balance he discovered a much larger amount had been withdrawn.

"The complainant followed the instructions and, using his wife's card, began the payment procedure, after which he received a message about a successful transaction, and shortly after received another message and, after checking the amount that had been withdrawn from his account, realized that he had been scammed," said Ana Milevska-Gjorgieva, spokesperson for the Regional Police Directorate — Veles.

The man filed the report at OVR Negotino on 19 August; investigators from the Regional Police Directorate — Veles provided the account of the incident.
