Storm in Cyprus: One dead, two seriously injured at Kavo Greco

A severe storm struck the southeastern part of Cyprus and ended with one fatality and two people seriously injured after three boats were stranded on rocks near Kavo Greco.

Rescue operation

Two helicopters and units of the police and the fire service participated in the rescue operation. Five people were evacuated by helicopter: two received first aid and were released for home treatment, two were hospitalized, and one likely escaped without injuries.

The man who later died was found unconscious and transported to hospital, where his death was confirmed.

The storm, accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain and hail, caused power outages and disruptions to road and air traffic. A total of 11 flights were diverted, and there were delays to departures from both Cypriot airports.

Additionally, a 45-year-old man from Sri Lanka was injured by a lightning strike and suffered burns; he was taken to hospital and is in good condition.

By 6 p.m. the fire service had received a total of 357 calls for assistance, mostly from the wider Nicosia area. The calls related to urgent interventions: extinguishing fires, traffic accidents and life-saving rescues, pumping water from buildings, removing debris and protecting property. One of the more serious but successful cases was the rescue of a child trapped under a terrace awning on the fourth floor — the child was pulled out without injuries.

Through the official civil protection system warnings were issued to the population across the country about the storm and the increased risk of flooding.

Separately, floods in Nepal have claimed more than 600 lives, and around 2,500 people are listed as missing.
