Storms hit Slovenia, northern Italy and Croatia — Kanin gusts reached 103 km/h
A Kanin station measured a 103 km/h gust as the storm caused power outages in Ljubljana and heavy rain in Rijeka and northern Italy.
Storms swept across parts of Slovenia, northern Italy and Croatia on 9 September 2026, bringing very strong gusts, heavy rain and local flooding. A meteorological station at Kanin recorded a peak wind gust of 103 kilometres per hour, while coastal sites reported gusts near 50 km/h.
Meteorological warnings and local impacts
Western Slovenia was the first to be struck, with the system moving inland and reaching Ljubljana around midday; parts of the capital experienced power outages. Authorities issued an orange warning for the Primorska region, which was later extended across wider areas as forecasts predicted heavy precipitation.
In northern Italy, heavy rain and strong winds felled trees and triggered localized floods in low-lying areas. Emergency services reported blocked roads and cut utilities in several communities as crews worked to clear debris.
Croatia also felt the effects of the same weather system: Rijeka recorded intense rainfall, and Zagreb was hit by strong gusts that disrupted traffic in some districts.
Meteorologists warned that the unsettled conditions could continue into Thursday, when localized totals from Slovenian Istria to central Slovenia might reach about 100 litres of rain per square metre in a short period — enough to cause flash flooding in vulnerable spots.
