King Harald V of Norway in critical condition; family gathers at Oslo hospital

King Harald V of Norway is reported to be in a critically serious condition after being hospitalised with a bacterial blood infection, the royal household said as close family members were seen gathering at Oslo University Hospital. Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon have cancelled all royal engagements.

Condition, duties and family response

The 89-year-old monarch has been in hospital for more than a week with the infection. He has reigned since 1991 and is currently the oldest serving head of state in Europe. His son, 53-year-old Crown Prince Haakon, is acting as regent while Harald remains absent from public duties.

Members of the royal family were observed arriving at the hospital in Oslo, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and prompting concern across Norway.

"The whole nation is with us and we send warm thoughts to the King and the rest of the royal family," said Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

In recent years the king has experienced several health problems that led him to reduce his official workload.
