Winter waymarking on Popova Šapka–Tito Peak fully restored
Šar Planina National Park, with help from European ambassadors, renewed the winter waymarking after deliberate damage in August.

Šar Planina National Park announced the complete restoration of the winter waymarking on the popular Popova Šapka–Tito Peak hiking route after some marker posts were deliberately destroyed in August.
The restoration work was carried out by the park with assistance from ambassadors of several European countries. At the presentation of the renewed trail, ambassadors from Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia were present, together with the Mayor of the Municipality of Tetovo, representatives of the Municipality of Bogovinje, officials from other institutions, members of mountaineering organisations and mountain enthusiasts.
Importance and context
The Popova Šapka–Tito Peak route is a frequently used winter trail and a key attraction for local and visiting hikers. Park officials said renewing the markings was necessary to preserve safe access and directional guidance during the winter season.
According to the park, part of the waymarking had been intentionally damaged in August, leaving some marker posts unusable. With diplomatic support and field crews, the damaged sections were repaired and the winter markers fully replaced.
A special guest at the event was world-renowned Czech alpinist Marek Holeček, recipient of the international Piolet d'Or award.
Park representatives highlighted the cooperative effort between the National Park and international partners and said they will continue monitoring the trail to prevent future damage and ensure safety for visitors.
