Ohrid airport reopens renovated passenger terminal after €2.7M upgrade

Ohrid "St. Apostle Paul" Airport reopened a renovated passenger terminal on 8 September 2026 after a €2.7 million upgrade that expanded check-in counters, enlarged passenger circulation areas, added dedicated security and carry‑on baggage zones, and reorganized parking with new equipment and technology to speed up and secure operations.

The work upgraded both public and back‑of‑house areas and, organisers said, was completed without interrupting flight schedules or passenger flows. The terminal now has a larger number of service desks and modern systems intended to improve throughput and the passenger experience.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, who attended the opening, welcomed the investment and linked it to rising traffic at the airport.

"With this, Ohrid Airport gains a different rhythm, a different profile, a different quality, and I am convinced that in the period ahead the number of passengers, as well as the number of companies using Ohrid Airport's services, will increase. This year Ohrid 'St. Apostle Paul' Airport is recording records. We have a day with the highest number of passengers ever in its history — more than 3,000. There are also days when we have more than 20 departures, which itself is a significant figure to be respected. I am convinced that in the period ahead, with all the construction activities and the support we provide as a Government, these numbers will double, will triple, and we will reach figures that represent our new target," said Mickoski.

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Aleksandar Nikoloski described the facility as practically a new airport terminal and pointed to long‑term improvements in traffic. He noted that the last large interventions at the site dated from 1970 and that the current development is surpassing expectations.

"Ohrid Airport has had more than 240,000 passengers just from January to June this year, and the two airports together this year will approach 4 million, something that was unthinkable for our airports, and we will continue to grow," Nikoloski said. He also announced progress on the Ohrid–Kicevo motorway: "The hardest section will open in the coming months. I expect the entire motorway to open during the first half of next year, and of course we will continue work on the other sections that should provide connection to Skopje and Skopje Airport."

Serkan Kaptan, chief executive of TAV Macedonia, said the company invested €2.7 million in the Ohrid project and that, across Macedonian airports to date, TAV had invested nearly €300 million.

"In this period, we have increased connectivity and annual traffic by more than four times. In 2026, Macedonian airports are among the fastest growing in Europe. We achieved growth of nearly 30 percent compared to the previous year. Ohrid Airport recorded its most successful July in its history, setting new records in both passenger numbers and the number of flights," Kaptan said.
