Investigation: About €370 million logged for Alta Bank vault but never arrived

An investigation order shows prosecutors suspect that Davor Macura illegally appropriated about €390 million linked to Alta Bank, and that most of that sum never physically entered the bank's vault.

Accounting entries but no cash

According to the document, roughly €370 million were recorded in the books as incoming turnover from the exchange office Alta Pay. Prosecutors believe those funds were in fact retained by Macura rather than deposited in the bank's safe.

The order further states that nearly €17 million were allegedly physically removed from the vault without any corresponding records. The timeline under scrutiny runs from the beginning of 2020 until the end of October 2026.

Two bank employees are also suspected of assisting in the scheme. The list of planned witnesses includes the governor of the National Bank of Serbia, Jorgovanka Tabaković, representatives of banking supervision and members of Alta Bank’s management.

Davor Macura and the two associates are currently held in custody. His lawyer, Isa Spahović, said: "Macura denies any guilt."
