Arnau Ortiz suspended — will miss Atletico's trip to Liverpool

Skopje, September 6, 2026 — Atletico Madrid will be without winger Arnau Ortiz for their Champions League trip to Anfield after UEFA enforced a suspension that dates back more than two years.

The 24-year-old, who this summer was promoted to Atletico's first team and given the number 16 shirt, must serve an outstanding sanction that originated from a red card he received on 15 August 2024 in a Conference League qualifying match. At that time his club, Śląsk Wrocław, lost the fixture 3:2 to St. Gallen.

Old sanction carries into Europe’s top competition

UEFA has activated the remaining period of Ortiz's suspension for continental competition, which means he will be unavailable for selection for the match at Liverpool's Anfield ground. The club confirmed the decision and Ortiz will watch the fixture from the stands.

Ortiz spent the last season with Śląsk Wrocław before earning a place in Atletico's senior squad this summer. The enforcement highlights how disciplinary measures from earlier European tournaments can be applied when a player returns to UEFA competitions.

Atletico travel to England without the young wide forward, and the coaching staff will need to reshuffle their options on the flanks for the Champions League meeting with Liverpool.
