Eighth West Nile death in North Macedonia — 70-year-old from Dracevo

A 70-year-old man from the Dracevo neighborhood of Skopje has become the eighth fatality from West Nile fever in North Macedonia this year. He was treated at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and had been in critical condition; medical records note several comorbidities.
Total confirmed infections now stand at 58, after the Institute of Public Health confirmed two new cases yesterday. Health authorities report that all those who have died from West Nile fever so far were men aged between 62 and 83 and had other underlying illnesses.
Concentration of cases in Skopje
Most infections have been recorded in Skopje municipalities Kisela Voda, Aerodrom, Gazi Baba and Butel. Local clinics and hospitals have been treating patients with varying severity, while public-health teams continue surveillance and testing.
The newly reported fatality was admitted to the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in a critical state and had multiple pre-existing health conditions, which the treating team said complicated his prognosis.
With 58 confirmed cases this season, health officials are monitoring the situation closely as they track new infections and provide guidance to vulnerable groups, particularly older patients with chronic illnesses.
