First Flyover sections in Thessaloniki to open in the coming days

Published 15 October 2026 — Sections of the new Thessaloniki ring-road project known as "Flyover" will be opened to traffic in the coming days, easing part of the long delays that drivers face in and around Thessaloniki.

The first stretch scheduled for reopening runs on the ring road from Papageorgiou Hospital to the slope toward the Neapoli neighbourhood. The lane will operate in the west-to-east direction and will be put into service together with new lighting along the section.

Construction of the "Flyover", intended to increase the capacity of Thessaloniki’s ring road and improve vehicle flow, is already more than 60 percent complete. Full completion of the project is not expected before May 2027, according to announcements by the Greek Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport.

What drivers should expect

Although completed sections will be gradually reopened, opening parts of the route will not eliminate congestion across the city. Work on the remaining segments continues, and motorists should follow temporary traffic signs and official notices about restrictions.

At the moment there is no confirmed schedule for night closures between 23:00 and 05:00, nor any official statement about tolling arrangements for the new sections; these details should be checked before travelling. For drivers from North Macedonia, the near-term relief is that the first finished stretches will soon return to service while the overall congestion relief is expected with the project's completion in May 2027.
