On August 8, 2026, a Ukrainian-made decoy drone of the "Maja" type crashed and exploded in a sunflower field near the village of Kardam in northeastern Bulgaria, about 100 metres from the border crossing with Romania. The incident exposed gaps in Bulgaria's air-defence capabilities and immediately sparked a political debate over the country's stance on the war in Ukraine.

Police and military units reached the crash site after a loud blast was heard at 08:10 local time. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said there were no casualties or infrastructure damage, but asserted the drone carried a "significant amount of explosives". Officials at the scene, however, reported much smaller effects — no crater was formed and only a handful of sunflower plants were damaged.

The wreckage lay roughly one kilometre from Bulgaria's compressor station on the Trans‑Balkan gas pipeline — which links Turkey and Ukraine — and close to a Romanian station. That proximity immediately raised questions whether critical energy infrastructure might have been the intended target.

Gaps in detection and the push for counter‑drone systems

Bulgarian authorities said neither Bulgarian, Romanian nor other NATO radars registered the incoming drone, a fact Prime Minister Radev cited as evidence of a lack of modern equipment able to detect low‑flying small unmanned aerial vehicles. Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov warned bluntly: "Да, потребни ни се нови системи за борба против дронови и тие мора брзо да се набават." He announced plans to seek up to ten counter‑drone and electronic‑warfare systems through the European Union's SAFE mechanism and to accelerate procurement of new radars, while acknowledging that even those measures would not provide full national coverage.

Stoyanov also noted that Bulgaria currently lacks a national counter‑drone strategy. "Војни со дронови се водат во нашето соседство од 2023 година, а досега не беа усвоени конкретни мерки," he said, signaling a step change in the government’s stated approach to aerial threats.

Investigators have not yet reconstructed the exact flight path the decoy took before crossing Romania into Bulgaria; the device was partially destroyed. Defence officials reported the drone's GPS system was not protected, leaving open the possibility it could have been manipulated. They cited both the chance of "spoofing" — electronic interference that alters GPS signals — and a technical failure, noting a faulty chip was found. The Defence Ministry declined to comment on whether Russian electronic interference is being actively investigated.

Former defence minister Todor Tagarev said the likeliest scenario is electronic‑warfare interference originating from Russia: "Најверојатната хипотеза е дека електронското војување довело до губење контрола врз дронот како резултат на дејствија на Русија." He also argued that the diplomatic response focused too quickly on Ukraine: "Мислам дека бугарскиот министер за надворешни работи пребрзо го повика украинскиот, наместо рускиот амбасадор." Kyiv has pledged full cooperation to clarify the circumstances.

The event gained political resonance because it occurred amid a shift in Sofia's foreign policy under Prime Minister Rumen Radev and his Progressive Bulgaria movement: in recent months Bulgaria halted state arms deliveries to Ukraine, blocked efforts within the European Union to sanction the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, and declined an invitation to join a coalition of countries supporting Ukraine. Russian officials praised Sofia’s restrained rhetoric, with Yuri Pilipson commending the government for its described "more restrained" and "more rational" tone.
