Five arrested in France after €9 million theft of four Renoir works

At least five people have been arrested in France over the theft of four artworks from the Renoir Museum on September 8, authorities say. The stolen pieces are estimated to be worth 9 million euros, and investigators believe two of those detained may be the thieves who carried out the raid.

How investigators say the theft was carried out

The theft took place in the early hours of September 8, when a group of assailants described by local officials as "well equipped" and "well informed" broke into the museum via its gardens. "They cut the fence and entered the museum through the ground floor, breaking one window. Then, with an electric saw they cut the clamps that were securing the frames of the artworks," Mayor Brajan Mason said.

Investigators have indicated the suspects may be connected to an organized crime group. Prosecutors and police have not yet disclosed further details about how the artworks were removed from the building or the identities of those arrested.

Authorities are continuing searches and questioning as they try to locate the missing pieces and determine whether the suspects acted alone or as part of a larger network. No recoveries have been publicly confirmed so far.

Police statements emphasize the methodical nature of the operation and the specialized tools used, underlining concerns among museum officials about security vulnerabilities at cultural sites.
