Stiv Naumov dorm residents report leaks, flooded rooms and loud radiator noise again

Students housed in the renovated Stiv Naumov dormitory in Skopje again reported leaks from ceilings, rooms flooded with water and very loud noises coming from radiators, and a student platform published video footage showing the problems.

The Instagram account of Studentarija.mk posted several clips that, according to the platform, were shared in student groups. One of the clips was filmed a few days earlier, while the rest were recorded yesterday evening and show water dripping from ceilings and, in other sequences, an intense banging or hissing sound the students say comes from the central heating system.

Platform and students raise questions about renovation quality

"This is a student dormitory that this academic year again received students after a comprehensive reconstruction and because of that such problems additionally raise questions about the quality of the executed works and whether all deficiencies were removed before the students moved in," the platform Studentarija.mk said in its post.

The platform also noted that the renovated dormitory was put back into use on 30 September and has capacity for about 1,150 students. The reconstruction reportedly cost around €10 million.

Last Saturday the Ministry of Education and Science reacted to earlier reports, describing the incidents as isolated and saying the building is still under warranty and the contractor is addressing the faults. The ministry also blamed some problems on irresponsible behaviour by users — for example clogged drains caused by wet wipes, an activated alarm following forgotten food in a turned-on microwave in a kitchenette, a cigarette lit in a room, a torn-off radiator, and vehicles parked on green areas — and said those situations have been resolved.

Students and the platform, however, say the same or similar defects have been reported several times since the start of the academic year. There was no immediate public response from the ministry about the videos posted yesterday evening.
