The Norwegian Royal Court announced that Princess Astrid has died at the age of 94, just two days after she attended the funeral of her brother, King Harald V.
King Haakon VIII, the new monarch, paid tribute to her public role, saying that throughout her long life she represented the royal household with warmth and dignity and that she consistently focused on care and inclusion for the most vulnerable members of society.
King Harald V died last month at 89, after serving for more than 35 years as head of state. His funeral was Princess Astrid's final public appearance.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced that Princess Astrid will be buried at state expense and that flags across the country will be flown at half-mast.
The royal court released the information in a brief statement, marking the end of a life closely linked to public service and the ceremonial duties of the monarchy.
