Asphalt paving begins on Boris Trajkovski Boulevard in Skopje
First layer of asphalt laid after what officials call a "thirty‑year wait"; traffic will be redirected so the opposite carriageway can be reconstructed next.
Asphalting work has started on Boris Trajkovski Boulevard in Skopje, the city mayor, Orce Gjorgjievski, announced on his Facebook page on 15 August 2026. Crews have laid the first layer of asphalt on the busy roadway, a step the mayor described as the end of a decades‑long wait.
Gjorgjievski stressed that the project will relieve a corridor used daily by more than 100,000 people and that the city has moved quickly since clearing outstanding legal and property issues.
Mayor: "No more excuses, only solutions"
In a post quoted by the city administration the mayor wrote: "I remember still as a child, the completion of this boulevard was a promise that was repeated for years. Generations of citizens heard promises, and more than 100,000 people who gravitate daily to this part of Skopje lived with congestion, nerves and traffic torment. That time ends! With my team we set a clear goal — not to look for excuses, but for solutions. Not to talk about what was impossible yesterday, but to show what is possible today when you work honestly, responsibly and with strong will."
He added that the municipality resolved long‑standing expropriation issues and thanked property owners for a cooperative approach. "We cleared the route and started construction at a strong pace. And today, something more than three months later, we are placing the first layer of asphalt!" Gjorgjievski wrote.
Work on one carriageway will be completed first so traffic can be redirected; once that side is finished reconstruction will begin on the opposite carriageway and that section will also receive a new asphalt surface. The mayor also noted that a new stormwater drainage system was built alongside the pavement to provide a long‑term solution for runoff and to increase safety.
Summing up the project, Gjorgjievski wrote: "We promised and delivered. My people deserve modern and safe road infrastructure. They deserve normal living conditions. They deserve a city that moves forward. And that is exactly the Skopje we will build — with work, with results and with deeds that remain behind us. We are building Skopje together."
