Intercity bus fares rise: Veles–Skopje 250 denars, Veles–Ohrid 980 denars

Passengers who rely on intercity buses are facing higher travel costs after a wave of fare increases that took effect from the beginning of September. Several carriers raised prices on routes operating from Veles, citing higher fuel expenses as the main reason.

The new fares push up daily and monthly budgets for commuters, students and others who travel frequently. On some shorter routes the ticket rose by 50 denars, while on longer lines the increase reaches 120 denars per one-way trip.

Which routes changed and by how much

Key changes on lines departing Veles are:

  • Veles – Skopje: from 200 to 250 denars (increase 50 denars).
  • Veles – Bitola: from 530 to 630 denars (increase 100 denars).
  • Veles – Ohrid: from 860 to 980 denars (increase 120 denars).
  • Veles – Gevgelija: from 440 to 450 denars (increase 10 denars).
  • Veles – Strumica: from 520 to 570 denars (increase 50 denars).
  • Veles – Shtip: from 210 to 250 denars (increase 40 denars).
  • Veles – Kavadarci: from 300 to 350 denars (increase 50 denars).

For commuters on the Veles–Skopje run, the one-way ticket is now 250 denars instead of 200 — a 25% rise. A passenger buying two tickets per workday would pay 100 denars more daily; across 22 working days that adds 2,200 denars a month.

The largest absolute rise in denars is on Veles–Ohrid (120 denars one way). For families the impact can be substantial: four full-price tickets to Ohrid now cost 3,920 denars one-way and 7,840 denars round-trip, excluding any discounts. Transport companies point to fuel costs as the primary driver, while other operating expenses — maintenance, parts, insurance and wages — also factor into pricing decisions. There is no official information yet about further adjustments.
