Shar Planina National Park installs fences and barriers to stop motor vehicles
The park moved from appeals to on‑the‑ground fences after off‑trail motorized rides continued to damage sensitive highland areas.

Shar Planina National Park has started installing physical fences and barriers in its high-mountain areas to block vehicle access to places where motorized traffic is banned.
Park management earlier issued an appeal asking owners of quad bikes, motorcycles and other motor vehicles to remain on designated tracks and to avoid strictly protected zones, warning that off‑trail driving damages the environment.
That appeal apparently did not stop the illegal rides, so the park has moved to concrete interventions on the ground.
New barriers and restricted access
The recent measures include the erection of fences and physical barriers at routes leading to sensitive highland sites, with the explicit aim of preventing entry by motorized vehicles where movement is prohibited.
Park officials say the installations are part of broader efforts to protect fragile mountain habitats from erosion, vegetation loss and other harms caused by off‑road driving.
Visitors and vehicle owners are being urged to respect the marked trails and the park’s protected zones to avoid further damage to the natural landscape.
