Landfill fire in Ednokukjevo, smoke detected across Strumica area
Fire crews intervened twice; Bosilovo mayor Risto Manchev says clearing and covering work with machinery is due to start today.
A fire broke out at the landfill in Ednokukjevo and smoke from the blaze has been noticeable across the Strumica area since yesterday afternoon, through the night and into the morning, local firefighters reported.
The Strumica Territorial Firefighting Unit has responded to the site twice so far. Crews returned early today to continue efforts to contain and fully extinguish the flames.
Response and next steps
Firefighters remain on alert and are conducting repeated interventions to prevent rekindling while assessing the extent of the burning material.
According to Risto Manchev, mayor of Bosilovo Municipality, clearing and covering operations using appropriate heavy machinery are expected to begin during the day to secure the dump and limit further emissions.
Municipal and emergency teams will continue to monitor the situation and carry out suppression work until the fire is completely out and the area is deemed safe.
