At least nine people were killed in a fire that broke out this morning at a hotel in Kolkata, in the northeastern part of India, officials said.

A fire service official said six men, two women and one child were rescued from the burning hotel and taken to hospital. Several others suffered injuries, authorities added.

Emergency response and rescue

Firefighters and emergency teams rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised, conducting search-and-rescue operations inside the building and working to bring the blaze under control. Medical personnel received the survivors and treated the injured at nearby hospitals.

Local authorities have not released the names of the victims. Efforts to determine the full number of people affected continued through the day as rescue teams completed their work at the site.

Officials said an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway and further details will be provided as they become available.
