On 11 August 2026 Jorge Garbajosa, president of FIBA Europe, returned to North Macedonia with a visit to Gevgelija where he watched the cadet national teams of North Macedonia and Ukraine face off.

Garbajosa had previously attended the Youth Basketball Convention in Skopje, and this trip came at the invitation of the leadership of the Basketball Federation of North Macedonia and the mayor of Gevgelija. His presence coincided with the Division B U16 European Championship games hosted across Gevgelija and Skopje.

Warm reception and a symbolic gift

At the arena the mayor of Gevgelija, Andon Saramandov, and the president of the Basketball Federation of North Macedonia, Tomche Glavchev, officially welcomed Garbajosa. From the stands he followed the U16 match between North Macedonia and Ukraine.

As a gesture of hospitality, Garbajosa was presented with a specially made jersey from KK Kozhuf, marking his visit to a town that for these days has become one of the focal points of European youth basketball.

The visit underlined the ongoing cooperation between FIBA Europe and the Basketball Federation of North Macedonia and highlighted the continental organisation's interest in supporting the development and promotion of youth basketball in the country.
