Trial of Iva Mihailova continued as experts testified
Expert witnesses testified in Kocani; Mihailova says dual citizenship prevents her from seeking treatment abroad after her request to return documents was denied.
The trial of Iva Mihailova from Kocani continued today at the Basic Court in Kocani, where she faces charges over a traffic accident that resulted in a fatality.
Expert witnesses for the accident gave testimony before the chamber. The courtroom was again crowded with Bulgarian politicians and relatives of Mihailova, who has argued that her dual Macedonian and Bulgarian citizenship leaves her discriminated against by Macedonian authorities and prevents her from receiving medical treatment abroad.
Background of the case
The crash occurred in October last year; one person died and several others were injured, including Mihailova. She rejects responsibility and maintains the accident was not caused by her actions.
Mihailova received support from Bulgarian members of parliament after her request to have her personal documents returned was denied. Those documents were seized as precautionary measures so she could not travel for medical treatment abroad.
Her petition to return the documents was rejected by the Basic Court in Kocani at the beginning of August, and that decision was later upheld by the Appellate Court in Shtip. The trial will continue with further expert evidence and court procedures.
